Introduction

One of the powerful marketing tools a comedian can have at their disposal is online videos of their stand-up comedy.

If your goal is to become a professional comedian, then you should be well aware of how “funny” is determined by individual viewers watching an online video of stand-up comedy and understand that…

Those viewers can and will include comedy talent buyers and agents — so pay close attention. I will cover that important aspect shortly.

But it is important to understand how the average, everyday person determines “funny” as it relates to your stand-up comedy video as well as how a comedy talent professional will determine “funny” from the same video.

Background Information

One of the most obvious aspects of an online stand-up comedy video that is largely overlooked, even by professional comedians is this:

Laughter generated from an audience by a comedian in ANY stand-up comedy video DOES NOT significantly impact or influence laughter generated from the average individual viewer watching that video.

In other words, the audience dynamics that allow any comedian to generate frequent and strong laughter from an audience in the live performing environment are GONE when an individual watches a stand-up comedy video alone.

Think of it this way:

Let’s assume you were a famous headlining comedian and can make an audience laugh so hard that their sides hurt the next day.

But you walk out on stage for a gig and there is ONE audience member sitting before you.

Are you going to be able to generate 20-30 seconds of laughter each minute you are performing for that ONE audience member?

Not hardly, no matter how funny you may be in front of an audience of 500+ people. TV credits won’t help. Past movie roles won’t help. Worldwide fame and fortune won’t help when it comes to getting the big laughs.

Why? Because with just one person present, the audience dynamics are not in the room to generate headliner laughter as a stand-up comedian.

This situation is no different when an average viewer watches a stand-up comedy video alone — the audience dynamics (along with the contagious nature of laughter) are missing.

So how does the “average Joe” watching an online video of your stand-up comedy actually determine that you are “funny” or that you suck?

How “Funny” Is Actually Determined In Online Videos

Given that a comedian is completely stripped of the audience dynamics when an individual viewer watches a stand-up comedy video…

Here’s what is left to determine whether or not a comedian is “funny” or not:

- Physical appearance
- Demeanor and attitude
- Delivery style and expression qualities

And most importantly of all — the ability of the average viewer to understand, relate to and appreciate the stand-up comedy material delivered by the comedian.

It’s a known fact that comedians simply don’t appeal to every possible audience demographic in the live performing environment.

But armed with audience dynamics, audience members who wouldn’t necessarily care much for a headlining comedian or their stand-up comedy material in an online video will laugh wildly in a live performing environment because of the contagious nature of laughter — which is significantly influenced by audience dynamics (audience size and seating).

What does this mean?

It means that without the power of audience dynamics — which is exactly what happens when the average person watches a stand-up comedy video alone…

The comedian is essentially left with the smallest demographic possible — individuals who will make a determination if a comedian is “funny” or not, which is not based on the laughter generated from the live audience as evidenced in the online video…

But based primarily on the ability of the average viewer to understand, relate to and appreciate the stand-up comedy material delivered by the comedian.

This is also the reason why most stand-up comedy videos DON’T go viral in a big way.

Related Article: Why Stand-up Comedy Videos Don’t Go Viral

A professional comedian’s goal should always be to develop and deliver stand-up comedy material that has appeal to widest possible audience demographics.

So, am I saying you shouldn’t have online videos of your stand-up act?

Not at all. But what I am saying is this:

As a comedy professional, you need to be a bit smarter than the “average Joe” when it comes to stand-up comedy online videos you use for your website, social media sites — especially when it can involve review by agents, talent buyers and comedy bookers.

What Agents, Talent Buyers And Comedy Bookers Look For In Videos

Just like when any other individual is watching a stand-up comedy video alone, the audience response in the video won’t carry over when an agent, talent buyer or comedy booker reviews your video.

But comedy talent professionals understand this and look closely at the two most important aspects they need to consider a comedian for hire or to take the additional time to watch the comedian live prior to hiring them:

1. The frequency, duration and intensity of the laughter generated by the comedian in a live performing environment (which is NOT a consideration for the average online viewer who makes a purely subjective determination of what “funny” is or is not).

2. The suitability of the content the comedian delivers for the venue, event, club, etc. that they are being considered as a hire for.

In other words…

Comedy talent professionals know that a comedian’s power is on the live stage and is not accurately represented in a stand-up comedy video viewed on an individual basis.

If comedy agents, talent buyers and bookers only used the subjective criteria that the “average Joe” uses to determine who is “funny”…

Very few comedians would ever get hired as a result of video submissions — online or otherwise.

So it is ALWAYS in a comedian’s best interest to only upload stand-up comedy videos (with the exception of those being used for personal evaluation purposes only) that have these characteristics…

Putting Your Best Foot Forward In Your Online Stand-up Comedy Videos

1. Display comedy material that generates the longest, strongest and most frequent laughs in a live performing environment.

2. Display comedy material that will appeal to the broadest audience demographic possible.

3. Video clips should NEVER be edited to improve the punchline frequency of any particular bit — that is a red flag for comedy talent professionals.

4. Many comedy talent professionals want to see a clip of the very first part of your act immediately after being introduced because…

This will tell them how long it takes you to start generating laughter with a “fresh” audience and provides a quick indication of a comedian’s ability on stage.

5. Any particular online video clip you upload for comedy talent professionals to review should be 5 minutes or less in duration — if a comedy talent professional wants more, they will ask you.

One of the reasons that Comedy Evaluator Pro is such a powerful tool for comedians is because:

While it doesn’t measure subjective aspects of a stand-up comedy performance…

It will absolutely identify with precision the stand-up comedy material that generates the highest frequency and intensity of laughter from an audience in ANY particular stand-up comedy video — on a minute-by-minute basis.

In other words…

Comedians who use Comedy Evaluator Pro don’t have to “guess” which parts of their stand-up comedy have the most laughter impact in front of a LIVE audience — they know beyond a shadow of a doubt.

Still, confusion and controversy surround Comedy Evaluator Pro and here’s why…

Confusion And Controversy Surrounding Comedy Evaluator Pro

First, let’s cover some facts:

1. Live audience laughter does not influence laughter generation when it comes individual viewership of stand-up comedy videos.

2. A comedian’s true ability to generate laughter and entertain is in the LIVE performing environment and will NEVER be accurately represented in a stand-up comedy video being watched and consumed by a single individual, devoid of audience dynamics.

Even so, here’s a comment I frequently get about Comedy Evaluator Pro:

I just used your software to evaluate a popular comedian who I don’t like and I don’t think is funny at all. But your software says they are performing above the headliner levels you talk about. What’s up with that?

Here’s exactly what is happening is this when I get comments like that:

Average individuals are trying to compare a comedian’s comedy material on a strictly subjective level (that they don’t like, can’t relate to or appreciate) without any regard to…

The actual laughter RESULTS that comedian was able to command in front of a LIVE audience (individuals influenced by audience dynamics who liked the comedian and could relate to and appreciate the comedy material the comedian delivered in the video).

This is exactly like trying to compare the destructive qualities of a glass or water with those of a tidal wave because — they are both water, right? They are both wet, right? They are made from the same elements, right?

But only an absolute fool would even attempt that argument because one significant piece of the puzzle is missing — volume and associated mass differences.

The same can be said when trying to make a comparison between the audience laughter response in a live stand-up comedy performance and the laughter response to an online video of that same performance being watched by a single individual because — they are both the same thing, right?

And if a headlining comedian is not funny in an online video, then they can’t be funny when you go to see them live, right?

But once again, a significant piece of the puzzle is missing from that fool’s argument as well — it’s called live audience dynamics.

Final Thoughts

Every professional comedian has the exact same goal when it comes to delivering their stand-up comedy for audiences in the LIVE performing environment, which is:

Deliver headliner level comedy material which generates a minimum average of 18 seconds or laughter, cheering or applause for each performing minute (PAR Score 30).

Note: I didn’t establish that standard — it was already established by headlining comedians long before I was born or Comedy Evaluator Pro was invented. I just developed a measurement tool to identify if that standard is being met or not.

Related Article: Understanding The Objective Metrics Of Headliner Level Stand-up Comedy

Important: The minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter per performing minute must be representative of the majority of the live audience in any video — not just one or two audience members.

Here’s another very important thing to understand about online stand-up comedy videos:

If you use social media websites to display your stand-up comedy material (Facebook, Twitter, MySpace) and you know beyond a shadow of a doubt that you generated headliner laughter levels in stand-up comedy material delivered to the LIVE audience in the video clip:

Unfortunately, you can still (and will) get some negative and inappropriate comments about your stand-up comedy from non-comedy professionals.

But now you should know why and simply disregard those comments because…

If you are truly generating an average of 18+ seconds of laughter each minute in any online video clip of your stand-up, then you are delivering headliner level comedy material — no matter what any casual passerby may think using a purely subjective assessment on an individual viewership basis.

So, don’t take those sorts of comments personally. You should be smart enough to know that you will not appeal to everyone, especially when it comes to individual viewership by the “average Joe” of any stand-up comedy video that you display anywhere.

Now as far as using Comedy Evaluator Pro to determine which of your stand-up comedy videos are the most powerful…

Comedy Evaluator Pro will not tell any comedian:

- The audience demographics they will appeal to

- The suitability of their comedy material for any particular event, function or market

- Their suitability for acting roles

- Who will “like” and appreciate their stand-up comedy material subjectively in an online video when their act is viewed by a single individual.

But Comedy Evaluator Pro WILL tell any comedian — regardless of “style” or content — if they are meeting or exceeding the minimum standard for delivering headliner level comedy material in front of a LIVE audience, overall and on a minute-by-minute basis.

Unfortunately, most comedians haphazardly “guess” which of their online video clips will put them in the best possible light for review by professional comedy agents, talent buyer and bookers.

But hopefully you now have a better understanding about how “funny” is determined in online videos — by the “average Joe” and by professional comedy agents, talent buyers and bookers.

Fact Or Fiction?

Many people, including comedians at every level aggressively question how I am able to use objective metrics to determine how funny a comedian is or if they are delivering headliner level stand-up comedy material.

And I actually get accused of “making up” false standards or trying to establish impossible goals for comedians and their stand-up comedy performances, especially since stand-up comedy is such a “subjective” performing art.

I will be the first to admit that appreciation of a comedian’s comedy material on an individual basis is very subjective on an individual-by-individual basis, especially when that determination is made outside the LIVE performing environment.

However — the laughter, cheering or applause a comedian can generate from any particular performance in front of a LIVE audience is not only clearly observable, but objectively measurable and easily quantifiable.

The Standards Were Already Established

I haven’t managed to set or even establish a single “standard” when it comes to delivering headliner level stand-up comedy material or generating the laughter results a headliner comedian can command when standing before a LIVE audience.

Any “standard” that exists when it comes to generating headliner level laughter response from an audience was established when stand-up comedy became a recognized performing art and continues to be maintained by talented headliner comedians today.

The only thing I have managed to do is develop a process using software to measure and quantify on a minute-by-minute basis what headliner comedians have been able to accomplish for decades:

Headline Level Performance Metrics

1. Headline comedians usually generate 4-6+ substantial laughs each performing minute. By doing that…

2. Headline comedians generate a minimum average of 18+ seconds of laughter, cheering or applause for each performing minute (PAR Score 30+).

3. Comedy “star” level comedians seem to generate 24+ seconds of laughter, cheering or applause per minute range (PAR Score 40+).

Note: This increase in PAR Score is directly related to the larger audiences that comedy stars tend to perform for — which results in longer laughter, cheering or applause durations during a performance.

PAR Score: The percentage of each minute of a stand-up comedy performance that demonstrates measurable audience laughter, cheering or applause (Positive Audience Response).

Don’t Take My Word For It

The metrics I have identified above are 100% verifiable.

Simply use Comedy Evaluator Pro to evaluate ANY widely distributed stand-up comedy vinyl LP album, 8 track tape, cassette tape, CD, DVD, MP3 or online video of any established headliner comedian performance commercially produced since 1955.

I have conducted many hundreds of evaluations over the years on audio and video recordings of popular headliner comedians of every possible content type, style, age, or gender.

And I didn’t just conduct CEP evaluations on established and popular comedians that I personally “liked” and appreciated — still, the metrics identified above remain undeniably consistent when it comes to headliner level performances delivered to LIVE audiences, even among the headliner comedians that I personally cannot stand to watch.

One important aspect of stand-up comedy that is hidden in plain site is that there is a HUGE difference between:

A purely subjective determination on an individual basis on whether or not a comedian is “funny” and the measurable frequency of laughter, cheering and applause a comedian can generate from a LIVE audience.

Related Article: Getting Hired As A Comedian: How “Funny” Is Determined In Online Stand-up Comedy Videos

The Last Word

So for the record — I didn’t “establish” any standards when it comes to generating headliner level laughter levels.

Talented stand-up comedians of every possible “flavor” were meeting or exceeding the “standards” that I have only managed to identify, one audience at a time long before I was even born and continue to do that today — whether they use Comedy Evaluator Pro or not.

What I think is very exciting for those who are new to stand-up comedy when it comes to using Comedy Evaluator Pro is this:

Comedians don’t have to hold the “title” of headliner comedian in order to know beyond a shadow of a doubt for them selves that they are developing and delivering headliner level stand-up comedy and generating headliner level laughter, cheering or applause from the LIVE audiences they appeal to with their unique style and sense of humor.

And having objective metrics, along with minute-by-minute analysis of any stand-up comedy performance will tell any comedian what parts of their stand-up comedy act are rock solid and which parts need revision or improvement — which can potentially shave years off the time it takes for a comedian to reach headliner audience reaction levels.

Football wouldn’t be a valid sport without a goal line. Well, when it comes to stand-up comedy…

You now know what the “goal line” is if you ever want to make any significant headway as a stand-up comedian.

The trouble with people is not that they don’t know but that they know so much that ain’t so. -Josh Billings

I suspect you will always run into negative comments online as well as from other comedians you meet about Comedy Evaluator Pro for a number of reasons:

1. As I have mentioned before, stand-up comedy is a highly competitive performing art.

Subsequently, most comedians are unwilling or unable to provide information of any real value to another comedian to help them succeed as a comedian.

To put it bluntly, most comedians selfishly want other comedians to suck, struggle and suffer as long and hard as they have in the business and will NOT say anything good about Comedy Evaluator Pro under any circumstance because it can potentially shave years off a comedian’s development and delivery of stand-up comedy material.

Hint: Any system or process that even remotely smells like a potential shortcut or an advantage for another comedian is usually largely and loudly frowned upon.

2. Despite any outward appearance to the contrary, most comedians (and so-called comedy “experts” as well) are extremely ignorant or severely misinformed when it comes to understanding comedy mechanics, audience dynamics, or measurable audience response frequency and duration — much less having so much as a clue about performance improvement or how to even conduct such activities.

For most comedians, stand-up comedy is (and will always be) a strictly a “trial and error”, “hit or miss” process and they fully expect it to be that way for any other comedian trying to make headway in the world of stand-up comedy.

I should also mention that there is no need for comedians who consistently bomb on stage night after night to use Comedy Evaluator Pro.

3. Many comedians are quick to hide behind the “subjective” nature of stand-up comedy, even though many can’t generate so much as a measurable giggle from audiences with their stand-up comedy material.

Related Article: Getting Hired As A Comedian: How “Funny” Is Determined In Online Stand-up Comedy Videos

Denial about an individual’s actual comedic ability in front of live audiences runs rampant in this business.

And it severely chaps many comedians that a tool is available to objectively measure and determine just how funny (or unfunny) they may be when delivering their material for live audiences.

But don’t take my word for any of this. Go to ANY stand-up comedy open mic and see for yourself what I am talking about first hand.

The Amazing Part

Here’s what I find absolutely fascinating about negative comments regarding Comedy Evaluator Pro:

There is no “theory”, speculation or conjecture involved in the measurement of the duration and frequency of audience laughter, cheering or applause generated by a comedian during a comedy performance.

Unlike trying to convince someone that there is an undetectable entity such as low frequency sound waves that cannot be heard, there are no such “undetectable” forces at work in stand-up comedy.

Audiences can hear (and see) when a comedian is delivering their comedy material.

Audience laughter, cheering and applause breaks can be heard and measured, unless…

Audience response is simply not there to be heard or measured during a comedy performance.

Prolonged episodes of an absence of laughter during a comedy show is commonly known as BOMBING in the world of stand-up comedy — a situation universally accepted as highly unfavorable for comedians.

Oddly enough, comedians who bomb simply will not progress in the dog-eat-dog world of stand-up comedy.

The Scene Cut From The Movie “I Am Comic”

When I went to Los Angeles in 2009 to film a part in the stand-up comedy documentary “I Am Comic” about Comedy Evaluator Pro, I had no idea until after the filming that…

The host and narrator Ritch Shydner, an accomplished headlining comedian and comedy writer was convinced that Comedy Evaluator Pro was some sort of bogus “gimmick”.

But after explaining how the process worked and conducting number of evaluations using the software on comedians at all levels, Ritch turned to me at the end of the filming and said:

“Knowing what I know now, why wouldn’t every comedian use this software to improve their act?”

I quickly replied:

“Because most comedians don’t want to know how badly they suck.” Everyone in the room immediately cracked up with laughter.

But unfortunately, that scene didn’t make the cut for the movie — which is an outstanding documentary (without my part in the film) and a “must see” for anyone serious about stand-up comedy.

The Bottom Line

Comedy Evaluator Pro can potentially provide comedians, comedy entertainers, and speaking professionals with an almost unfair advantage over the competition in any market, provided that…

Individuals who use the software tend to have real comedy talent and understand the value of engaging in intelligent and calculated performance improvement activities.

Hmmm…that’s starting to smell like a possible shortcut to me. And as I mentioned earlier, those are hugely frowned upon.

So, the next time you see or hear a negative comment about Comedy Evaluator Pro (which won’t ever go away), just ask yourself this question:

Is the person making that negative comment about Comedy Evaluator Pro able to consistently generate headliner level laughter from live audiences with their stand-up comedy material?

In the vast majority of cases you will find the answer to be — not even close.

But whether an individual decides to use Comedy Evaluator Pro or not for performance benchmarking and improvement…

I still want everyone who has the spine to tackle stand-up comedy to experience the shear exhilaration and sense of accomplishment that delivering headliner level stand-up comedy material provides as soon as humanly possible.

There are few thrills on the planet that even come close.

There are certain performance variables outside the quality of stand-up comedy material delivered that will always have a direct impact on a comedian’s laughter generation ability.

These variables are known as audience dynamics.

Keep this in mind as you review the information provided in this article:

Laughter is a shared response in all communication situations, letting the communicator know that the funny (and usually unexpected) context, perspective or “joke” was understood, acknowledged and appreciated.

The magnitude of this shared response (laughter) is directly influenced by audience dynamics.

Understanding Audience Dynamics

Here are the basics every comedian should know about audience dynamics and how they can influence a comedian’s performance on stage, keeping in mind that…

The performance results an individual obtains using Comedy Evaluator Pro also directly reflect the positive or negative impact of the audience dynamics present during any particular performance.

The Basics

1. Audience size. Bigger audiences will react with longer and louder laughter than smaller audiences.

Smaller audiences will usually (but not always) react with shorter and less intense laughter than larger audiences.

As a general rule and contrary to popular belief, audience size is the LEAST important variable for generating headliner level laughter PROVIDED the other audience variables described below are positive in favor of the comedian — audience members (20+) closely seated together, attentive to the show and warmed up.

2. Audience seating. Audiences seated more closely together will always react with longer and louder laughter than those who are seated farther apart — regardless of audience size.

3. Audience attentiveness. If the audience is not focused on the show provided by a comedian or the comedian must compete with distractions in the room where the performances are taking place…

It can be difficult for a comedian to generate laughs from a distracted audience, no matter how funny, proficient and prepared a comedian may be to deliver high impact stand-up comedy material.

4. A “cold” audience versus a “warmed up” audience. This aspect of a stand-up comedy performance usually only affects the very first comedian or opening act in a stand-up comedy show.

However…

A comedian performing directly before another in a line-up of stand-up comedians bombs or offends an audience with their stand-up comedy material can turn a “warmed up” audience into a “cold” audience.

It tends to take a bit longer to develop momentum and generate bigger laughs with an audience until they are “warmed up”, which means that the ice has been broken and the audience trusts the comedian and the show.

5. Audience demographics. Audience demographics can also greatly affect a comedians ability to generate laughter.

One example is an all male audience, which can be very difficult to generate significant laughter levels as compared to a gender mixed audience.

Understanding how these audience variables can impact laughter levels is important because:

Unless your stand-up comedy material works well 100% of the time with every possible audience dynamic…

You can only make the most intelligent comparisons on the true power and consistency of your stand-up comedy material on a performance-by-performance basis with shows that have similar audience dynamics — whether you use CEP to evaluate your performances or not.

Otherwise you can end up wasting your time making unnecessary changes to your stand-up comedy material or even worse…

Throwing out or revising solid comedy material you have developed because you didn’t understand audience dynamics and the variations in response you can get — from the exact same comedy material which are directly influenced by audience dynamics.

Examples of Misaligned Performance Level Comparisons

One of the things that comedians do is compare performance levels for a wide variety of audiences in order to determine the overall impact and consistency of their comedy material.

However, smart comedians also know not to compare apples with oranges so to speak (misaligned performance level comparisons) when it comes to the wide spectrum of possible audience dynamics — which can be slightly different to vastly different from performance to performance.

Here are some examples misaligned performance level comparisons:

- Comparing a performance for an audience as the first comedian in a line-up of comedians to a performance after the audience has been warmed up.

- Comparing a performance for an audience that is attentive and closely seated with a different audience or similar size that was closely seated, but there were TV’s on in the room and people playing darts next to the stage.

- Comparing a performance for an audience of 100 people closely seated in a small room to an audience of 100 people spread out in a 500 seat venue.

- Comparing a performance with a warmed up audience with a performance after a comedian has offended the audience.

- Comparing a performance for a group of engineering or other highly analytical types of individuals to a general, mixed gender audience performance.

- Comparing a performance for young college students to a performance for senior citizens.

These are just a few examples of misaligned performance comparisons a comedian can make if they don’t understand audience dynamics.

The Bottom Line

While there are a number of variables that can come into play when it comes to audience dynamics…

Comedy Evaluator Pro will provide true performance data on an overall basis and a minute-by-minute basis to help a comedian intelligently determine just how strong or weak their stand-up comedy material is relative to the audience dynamics present for any particular performance.

And make no mistake:

Headliner level stand-up comedy material will still produce significant laughter levels even when less than optimal audience dynamics are present.

No matter what the audience dynamics are for any particular performance, your goal should always be to generate headliner laughter which is a minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter per performing minute (PAR Score 30).

And unless your stand-up comedy material is simply not funny, you should be able to reach near or beyond that performance level most of the time — barring performances with the absolute worst possible audience dynamics present.

Once you are ready to conclude a CEP evaluation (after the last laugh, cheer and or applause break in the recorded performance you are evaluating), click the Stop Evaluation button and the View Report button will appear at the bottom of the CEP Main Control Panel:

Simply click the View Report button to access a printable, minute-by-minute report of the comedy performance evaluated:

This is a screen shot of a CEP evaluation of an actual stand-up comedy performance by a comedian delivering an open miker level stand-up comedy performance — for 130 audience members.

Headliner level stand-up comedy generates a minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter, cheering or applause (PAR Score 30) per minute (or performance).

Notes:

1. If your stand-up comedy material is transcribed as you delivered it on stage, it is very easy to identify punchline effectiveness and set-up lines that need to be revised for brevity or deleted — on a minute-by-minute basis.

You can also get a very good indication of how much time your stand-up comedy material consumes when delivered relative to audience dynamics (size, seating, etc,) and audience response to your comedy material.

2. You should always include important information about the performance being evaluated in the Performance Notes section prior to printing such as:

- Audience dynamics (other than audience size for which there is a box)

- Interruptions or hecklers that impacted your show

- Any other notes about anything that may have influenced your performance

What You Need To Know First

Before I get into the detailed performance evaluation data that Comedy Evaluator Pro can generate for you for performance benchmarking and act improvement…

Here’s some information you should be aware of:

You need to have a video or audio recording of your stand-up comedy (or another comedian’s stand-up comedy) that you can listen to and hear the audience responses generated during the performance (or particular segment of a recorded performance) in order to conduct a CEP evaluation.

CEP is used to measure the audible frequency and duration of each episode of laughter, cheering or applause generated during any individual performance.

For performance improvement, it is best to have a printed copy of your stand-up comedy act transcribed or written down in order to correlate the performance data provided by CEP to the audience responses generated during any specific evaluated performance.

In order to obtain the most valuable performance data possible, only measure collective audience responses (laughter, cheering or applause) that are representative of the majority of the audience present during the performance — not the responses of only one or a few audience members.

Keep in mind that audience dynamics always have a direct impact on the maximum level of audience response any comedian can generate and should ALWAYS be considered when attempting to compare the performance data of one performance to another or establishing the stability or viability of stand-up comedy material.

Related Article: How Audience Dynamics Directly Impact Comedy Performance Levels

Your goal as a stand-up comedian is to generate a minimum average of 18 seconds of laughter for each performing minute on a consistent basis — regardless of the audience dynamics present during any performance.

What CEP Will Reveal About Your Stand-up Comedy

Here’s the performance evaluation data CEP can give you when evaluating video or audio recordings of your stand-up comedy:

1. Laughter Frequency (or PAR frequency) each minute

This will tell you how many episodes of laughter, cheering or applause that are generated each performing minute evaluated, providing a quick indication of:

-Adequate or insufficient punchline frequency

-Set-ups that are too long (and directly affect punchline frequency)

2. Laughter duration (or PAR duration) in seconds for each laugh or positive audience response generated

Relative to audience size and seating, this will tell you exactly how strong or weak any particular punchline is your act is.

This is one of the most powerful aspects of using CEP and can help pinpoint punchlines in a stand-up act that need immediate attention/improvement.

Note: Cheering and applause durations are also included in this aspect of the evaluation.

3. Total seconds of laughter (or PAR) each minute

Any particular minute of your stand-up comedy performance can be identified for “tightening” or improvement that is not producing a minimum of 18 seconds of laughter.

Note: Certain individual minutes of a stand-up act, such as the first minute and upon transition to a new topic can have less that 18 seconds of laughter and still provide the comedian with an overall average of 18+ seconds per minute for any particular performance.

Still, the goal is always to generate a minimum of 18 seconds of laughter per minute.

4. PAR (Positive Audience Response) Score – each minute and overall

PAR Score is nothing more than the percentage of time (by individual minute or for an entire evaluated performance) that was filled with audience laughter, cheering or applause.

An overall PAR Score of 30+ is a headliner level performance.

Comedy Evaluator Pro can also help you to easily determine which of your videos with the best audience response to put on your website or send to talent buyers:

Conclusion

While audience dynamics will always directly impact the performance data you generate from any given performance, make no mistake:

CEP will help you easily identify just how powerful and “tight” your stand-up comedy material is or is not and help you pinpoint specific areas in your act that need immediate improvement.

If you perform multiple evaluations on the same stand-up comedy material, CEP can also help you identify which parts of your act are “hit or miss” and need tightening for better consistency.

Using CEP can set you years apart from most other comedians who exclusively use the “trial and error” approach when developing/delivering their stand-up comedy material.

Probably one of the most powerful aspects of using CEP is this:

CEP will also tell you beyond a shadow of a doubt if you are delivering headliner level stand-up comedy material BEFORE you hold the “title” of headliner.

Note: Rarely, if ever will you hear anyone say that you are delivering headliner level stand-up comedy material. CEP allows you to know just how well you are doing without the need for feedback from anyone else.

Keep this in mind as you are considering using CEP for performance improvement:

Stand-up comedy is a highly competitive performing art where stage time can be very limited, especially in the beginning of a stand-up comedy career.

Subsequently…

You need to be able to make the most of every performance and make swift and intelligent decisions when it comes to making adjustments, edits, revisions or deletions to your stand-up comedy material.

That’s what CEP can do to help you develop and deliver headliner level performances on a consistent basis, whether you choose to “write jokes” the hard way or use the Killer Stand-up Comedy System.
